imo it's absolutely worth it, even if you're not that into the guild aspect of the game, gxp upgrades although not great are definitely a help, and if you have account upgrades maxed I think it's the only way to improve your xp income outside of orbs and support lvl

I'm testing the same thing on an alt that I just started yesterday. Currently level 30 and on the 8th forest (with the 9th unlocked but I do not have the gold for) Mine depth is still 1 (because I haven't even cleared it once) It's weird that I spent enough wood to have level 6 Axe/Log Splitting and level 2 critical but still haven't spent any on my mine because my mine isn't even done once!

In addition to leveling up the wood orb, I recommend also leveling up the gold orb - if for no other reason than to have more gold for sacrifices.

@Andez - you're missing the point. He has more than enough wood to level the mine each time it finishes - so he gets all his donations and gxp in.
