How about in addition to daily rewards, there could be a wheel of fortune? You would get 1 spin a day, AND you wouldn't be able to buy more spins, so that those with money wouldn't have an advantage over others.
The rewards could be something like this:
Common: (60% chance to appear) gold rewards (scaled)
Uncommon: (25% chance to appear) 5-10 AP or 5-10 Diamonds or 500-1500 Stone/Wood
Rare: (10% chance to appear) 25-50 AP or 25-50 Diamonds or 10-20 Pet food or 25-50 Expedition points
Epic: (5% chance to appear) 100 AP or 100 Diamond or 50 Pet food or 5 Event points
Legendary: (1% chance to appear) +10% Exp/Gold rate or +20% Auto/Click dmg
